Welcome
to our official city web site. My name is Edgar "Butch"
Hayburn, the mayor of Wellston. As you'll see in the following
web pages and links, Wellston is a wonderful place to live,
work and play. I should know. I've been a resident here my
entire life.
Wellston
Ohio was founded by Harvey Wells during the coal mining boom
immediately following the Civil War and was incorporated in
1873. This area of the state has a very rich history in coal
mining. Every year during the first full week in September
after Labor Day, our residents hold a festival to celebrate
our coal mining heritage.
Wellston
is the home of General Mills' largest pizza producing facility
in the United States and provides employment to hundreds of
people in our community. There are a variety of smaller business
in Wellston, from grocery stores to restaurants, building
materials and hardware sales, attorneys, health care facilities,
a pharmacy, convenience stores, insurance agents, banks, auto
sales and repair, furniture and home supplies, and more. The
Wellston Chamber of Commerce, our Downtown Revitalization
coordinator and Downtown Business committee are always working
to bring new people and businesses to our community. Wellston
has grown and continues to grow.
We are
a city of historic old homes, beautiful churches, lots of
shade trees and wonderful, friendly people. The Wellston City
School District campus features all new buildings and facilities
from K-12, along with the latest in technology in a modern
learning environment to best prepare our children for the
future. Our city recreation programs, skateboard park, the
bike path, and our close proximity to Lake Alma State Park
and Lake Rupert Nature Preserve provide outdoor enjoyment,
fishing, boating, camping, hiking and other recreation opportunities
for every person at every age in every season of the year.
I hope
you enjoy the web site. Should you visit Wellston, please
stop by the Mayor's office in the City Building and say hello.
The door is always open.
Once
again, welcome home !
